The purpose of this position is to supervise, direct, plan, coordinate and perform a variety of surgical nursing duties. The surgical nurse coordinator ensures quality pet care and promotes greater efficiency by organizing the plan for each day, directing nursing staff and ensuring policy and procedure are followed.
The coordinator educates junior staff, keeps all surgical staff on task, and sets an example for other members of the team.
When not performing specific nursing duties, the surgical nurse coordinator carries out management duties, including special projects, implementation of new policies and procedures, and employee management with support from the clinical support team. The surgical coordinator prioritizes projects and completes them in the order of greatest importance, delegating to other staff as appropriate.

General Duties
● Works alongside the surgical specialists, interns and registrars, to organise the day to day running of the surgical suite and its staff.
● Nurses Roster- Ensuring surgery nurse roster is up to date on the payroll platform and that it aligns with fair work legislation. Collaborate with the Practice Manager to manage leave requests. Ensuring cover for nurses and support staff taking leave.
● Implement and maintain processes to ensure the smooth running of surgery. Including equipment/instrument repair and maintenance.
● Ensure ordering is managed and stock levels controlled.
● Collaborate with Rehab regarding surgery patient needs and appointments.
● Collaborate with other departments that require the use of the theatre suite.
● Provide high standards and oversight of patient care.
● Upholding and adhering to hospital policies, procedures, standards and etiquette. ● Provide high standards and oversight of patient care.
● Operate and store equipment in accordance with approved operating procedures ● Contribute to the effective operation of the surgery department.
● Assist the clinician before, during and after procedures and consults.
● Maintain high standards of cleanliness and order in all hospital areas.
● Record and maintain all patient records in accordance with best practice.
● Play an active role in intersectional cooperation.
● Ensure invoicing for all treatment/procedure is reflected on patient record.
Responsibilities
Collaboration
● Part of the NVS culture is for all departments to work together in a collaborative way. It is important for you, as someone in a leadership role, to set an example for this and encourage your team to approach each day with a collaborative attitude.
● Speaking to HR and other members of the NVS management team to work out where help may be needed and offer assistance where possible.
● Checking in with other departments as to how they are coping with their workload each day.
● Speaking with other departments in regards to cases that need to be referred to surgery. Leasing with vets and interns as to what needs to be done – (Client comms, paperwork, deposits etc.) then making sure you either task someone with completing those steps or clearly communicating you will be completing those steps in order for the case to move ahead as smoothly as possible.
Leadership
● Attends the interdepartmental collaboration meetings.
● Directs and assists nurses, and keeps them on task in their performance of technical and duties.
● Recognizes non-routine or unusual situations and communicates them to the clinical support managers, along with recommended solutions.
● Maintains technical knowledge of products, procedures and standards.
● Explains the nature of and basis for hospital policies and procedures to staff when necessary.
● Prepares and oversees the preparation of the surgical nurse work schedule (allocation of cases each day)
● Ensures nurses are on time with cases.
● Oversees NVS standards are being met by surgical staff.
● Oversees completion of the surgical checklists by nursing staff
● Makes recommendations to the HR manager concerning personnel matters. Discusses disciplinary actions needed with the HR manager and assists with follow-through.
● Provides input on employee performance for reviews with clinical support manager ● Provides fair and impartial treatment to each employee with regard to scheduling and case allocation ● Directs on-the-job training of nursing and animal attendant staff.
● Gives prompt attention to requests for meetings, repairs, and supplies relating to surgical matters. ● Provides training and support to animal attendants
● Work alongside Surgical Intern to co-ordinate surgery patient discharges and client communication ● Communicates with the surgery team via internal comms.
● Working with surgical intern to provide content for NVS social media pages
Communications
● Liaises with client services booking coordinator to ensure surgery schedule and procedure list is accurate
● Maintains lines of communication with surgeons to ensure appropriate caseload taking into consideration the impact of staff and time management
● Communicates with the surgery team via internal communication channel to keep then up to date
● Monitor surgery email and action as required
